Rubidoux High School Concert Hall

About the Project

The Rubidoux High School Concert Hall was brought to life through the vision and persistence of Jurupa Unified School District’s longtime superintendent, Elliott Duchon. Architects For Education (A4E) in Pasadena brought the project to life thanks to their relationship with the District, who invited them to design the project as part of a larger strategy to elevate arts education across the campus. According to A4E, having Mr. Duchon’s backing made it all possible: “[his] passion for music, community pride, and student opportunity helped this project gain momentum, even in the absence of early community input or bond funding.”

Design Timeline

The design and construction process for the Rubidoux Concert Hall followed a steady trajectory, shaped by collaboration with the District and careful attention to site constraints, program needs, and evolving priorities. From initial concept through completion, the project unfolded over several years, reflecting a commitment to both quality and fiscal stewardship.

Combining CMU and Pavers

A4E has frequently used CMU and pavers in their education projects, particularly when durability, budget, and maintenance are key concerns. “We often combine CMU with other materials to add texture, depth, and rhythm to façades while preserving practical performance across K–12 environments.”

For the Rubidoux Concert Hall, CMU was used not just as a cost-effective and durable material, but as a defining design feature. The texture, scale, and modularity of the block provided a strong architectural identity — one that balanced elegance with robustness. Paired with complementary EcoHex pavers, the material palette helped root the building in its surroundings while elevating the experience for performers and audiences alike.

Material and Aesthetic Decisions

The CMU size and finish were carefully selected to reinforce the Concert Hall’s sense of permanence and importance on campus. A smooth-faced CMU in a warm, neutral tone was used to reflect the desert light and tie into the existing architecture, while still creating a distinct presence. The dark color choices were made with longevity and solar performance in mind, ensuring the building would age gracefully in its sunny Inland Empire environment.

The heart of this project is the performance space itself — a professional-caliber concert hall designed specifically for student musicians. With state-of-the-art acoustics, tailored rehearsal rooms, and a welcoming lobby, the building is a celebration of arts education. A4E is proud of how this space uplifts the school community and provides students with a venue worthy of their talents and ambitions.

Why ORCO?

According to A4E, “ORCO’s range of textures, reliable delivery timelines, and regional availability made them an ideal partner for this project. Their products allowed for consistency across large wall areas and integrated seamlessly with other finish materials. Their reputation for quality CMU ensured both constructability and visual appeal, which was essential for a high-profile performance venue like this.”
